Student who tested positive for Covid-19 attends Holy Family National School in Rathcoole, Dublin

A pupil who was sent home from school after testing positive for coronavirus attends the Holy Family National School in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, it has emerged.

A spokeswoman for the school told the Irish Mirror that all children in the affected class have also been sent home.

However it is understood that the rest of the school will continue to operate as normal.

The student did not contract that virus at school, and pupils were sent home in line with public health advice.

Remote learning will be made available for all students who are unable to attend class.

When asked about the confirmed Covid-19 case at a Dublin school, Education Minister Norma Foley said she would not comment on the communication made between the principal and parents but said the guidelines "were very clear."

She said: “I acknowledge where there is an incident in a school the guidelines are very clear.

“Where there is a confirmed case, public health takes over and they basically do all of the contacting.

“I wouldn’t place the burden on any principal or on any board of management or indeed staff in the school environment.”

It is the second school here to confirm a case of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours.

Jonesborough Primary School sent an urgent letter to parents yesterday informing them of a coronavirus infection.

The school is based in Co Armagh just metres from the border near Co Louth.

Principal Donal Keenan said any pupils who were in close contact with the positive case will be contacted by Northern Ireland's Public Health Agency.

All children in the year group will also be required to self-isolate for two weeks.

The classroom affected has been shut for a deep clean, but all other areas of the school are continuing as normal.
