Student Tory spat at while encouraging freshers to join Conservative society

A stand encouraging freshers to join a uni Tory society was SPAT at amid ugly scenes at a student event.

Newcastle University staged a fresher's fair for the thousands of new students who enrolled this term.

However, the stand, staffed by the Newcastle University Conservaties, was spat at during the event.

The organisation has played down the incident and insists the society fair was "a success".

"We know there was in incident at the stall and no one was hurt, it was only followed up on at council as a formality in order to ensure similar antisocial behaviour wasn’t repeated at our Union," said Stephen Dawes, President of the Newcastle University Conservatives.

"All reports of anti social behaviour that are reported to the society’s committee are passed on to Union officers along official channels as per our welfare policy.

"The society fair was a success for Newcastle University Student Union and our society in particular as we are now the largest party political society on campus."

On its website, the society refers to itself as a "social space for those with an interest in British politics and conservative thought."

It also states it advocates "civil liberties such as free speech, free association and free academia on campus".

The fresher's fair was staged over two days earlier this term, with stalls from dozens of societies.

However, members of the Student Union Council said they were "disappointed at the inaccessibility" of the event for disabled students after it was moved from the sports centre.

The Council claimed this was a "one off" due to the centre not being ready, while actions were put in place to make it more accessible - including staging a "quiet hour" at the start of the second day.

A Newcastle University Student's Union spokesperson said no formal complaint had been submitted over the spitting incident.
