St Andrews Square, Glasgow. This flat is in a quiet position in the centre of town and looks clean and new, and for £350 a month you get a double room (bills excluded). The landlord is looking for a young professional or mature student to share, and says he is “easy going, studying full time and working” so is out a lot. He also likes to “get stuck in with my work and let my hair down from time to time. Going to gigs, nights out, trying to get back into the gym and getting away as much as I can. Looking for someone kinda similar.” So there you go.

Two bedrooms are on the ground floor with a shower room, lounge and newly fitted kitchen; the rest is upstairs. The back garden is paved over and quite private, but looks like it has seen better days – which means you don’t have to worry about keeping it tidy. Stalbridge Avenue, Liverpool. Within spitting distance of Penny Lane, this four-bed terrace is available for £950 a calendar month and has a large hallway (room for bikes?), two receptions, a separate dining area and a newish kitchen with washer-dryer and fridge-freezer. There might be a bit of squabbling over the bedrooms though – one is a single.

Asplins Road, Tottenham. The locals might be a bit feisty – the recent riots started in Tottenham – and you have to share with three young men in the second and third years of their degrees. But they describe themselves as “respectful, fun and tidy”, and the house looks clean and recently refurbished. The rent is low for London at £400 a calendar month, including utilities.
