Student party in Swansea saw bottle smashed over man's head, hair torn out and knife carried as two men fought 'like animals'

A Swansea University student smashed a bottle over a man's head at a party before following him with a knife, a court has heard.

Travis Shawn Brown attended a party to celebrate the birthday of Ann-Mary Makani at her flat in Cambrian Place, Swansea, on October 5 last year.

Whilst at the party, the third year aerospace engineering student got into an altercation with Ms Makani's then boyfriend, Abdul Rahim.

Swansea Crown Court heard that they were the only two men at the party and that Brown had been "provoked" after Mr Rahim called him a "n*****".

The 21-year-old, of Bruce Road, South Norwood in London, picked up a bottle and smashed it over Mr Rahim's head which caused multiple lacerations which later required surgery.

When the victim left the flat, Brown then picked up a kitchen knife before following him into the hallway.

Sahara Fergus-Simms, defending, said that Brown was "remorseful" for his actions and that the incident had not been a "repeated or sustained attack".

She claimed that Brown had been faced with a "barrage of racial abuse" from Mr Rahim at the party and that he also said "he was from Afghanistan and that he was going to kill him".

The barrister told the court that Brown had a large plait torn from his scalp during the incident and claimed that he had received "threatening" phone calls and messages from the victim's friends afterwards.

In March this year, Brown was found guilty of unlawful wounding but was cleared of a separate charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Judge Geraint Walters, sentencing, told Brown that both he and his victim had "behaved like animals" at the party last year.

He said: "I know drink had been taken but my suspicion is a fair amount of wacky backy was used as well.

"That's the only way I can explain such off the wall behaviour from the two of you.

"You lost it and smacked him over the head with a bottle and when he was bleeding you picked up a knife and followed him down the hall.

"You've never done anything like this before. You make sure you don't do it again."

Brown was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and has to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay a £149 victim surcharge.
