Student "lucky to be alive" after walking away from car crash at roundabout

A WOMAN who had an epileptic seizure behind the wheel had been given the all-clear to drive two weeks earlier, one of her passengers has revealed.

Baillieston student Chel Murphy said she feels “lucky to be alive” after walking away from the one-vehicle crash near Whirlies roundabout in East Kilbride.

The 24-year-old and her friends Nicola Jack, Ryan Jack and Gina Shillinglaw were on their way to the University of the West of Scotland in Hamilton when the accident happened last month.

Chel said: “Gina, who had just been told by her doctor she could drive and hadn’t had a fit in two-and-a-half years, started shaking and taking a seizure.

“Ryan – out of instinct, I think, and to try to stop anyone else getting hurt or worse – grabbed the wheel.

“He pointed us away from the road but, as we went into the bushes, we flipped on to our roof.”

Three men rushed to the friends’ aid, holding the car steady so the passengers, who suffered only minor cuts and bruises, could get out safely.

Gina, who was semi-conscious, had to be removed from the Skoda Fabia by emergency services.

She was kept in hospital overnight for observation before being released.

Chel said: “How any of us got out in one piece – or even alive – was a miracle.

“I never got names for the three men. We would like to thank them properly for what they did.”
