Student injured in Kerry kayaking incident dies in hospital

A young student injured after the kayak she was in upturned while on a trip has died.

The woman, 20, is understood to be from Ballyshannon in Co Donegal, the Limerick Leader reports.

A search and rescue operation was launched shortly after 2.30pm on Saturday in rough river waters near Caragh Lake - part of the Reeks District near Glencar in Co Kerry.

The young woman who has now passed was airlifted to University Hospital Kerry.

Another male student also got into difficulty during the incident.

The 21-year-old was taken to Tralee hospital and his condition is said to be stable.

The two University of Limerick students were among a group of 20 others kayaking on the river, all of whom are members of the university’s kayak club.

The club has stopped all activities for the time being in light of the tragedy.
