Student hung herself after being 'period-shamed' by teacher who called her dirty

A 14-year-old schoolgirl hung herself after being period-shamed by her teacher who called her 'dirty'.

Jackline Chepngeno was reportedly asked to leave the classroom when her period showed through her clothing.

The student's mum, Beatrice Koech, said her daughter had nothing to use as a pad before going to school in the Kenyan village.

After returning home later that day, she told her mum how the teacher had taunted her, before going to fetch water.

Tragically she never returned and took her own life.

The incident sparked angry protests outside the school - with around 200 people calling for the teacher to be sacked.

Beatrice told local media: "She had nothing to use as a pad.

“When the blood stained her clothes, she was told to leave the classroom and stand outside."

A 2014 UN report said one in 10 girls in sub-Saharan Africa missed school because they are on their period.

In 2017 Kenya passed a law to provide free sanitary towels for schoolgirls from poverty stricken villages, but the programme had not been rolled out to the teen’s school.

The school's headteacher has not made a comment.
