Student 'fortunate to survive' after being stabbed in face following row over 'fake drugs'

A student could have died after being stabbed in the face following a row over 'fake drugs'.

He collapsed in hospital and had to be resuscitated three times after losing a significant amount of blood.

Mohamed Jeylaani, 20, knifed following an argument in the street near the Courtyard bar off Oxford Road.

Just before the brutal stabbing, the victim had bought some drugs from a man nearby, after spending the afternoon in the bar with a friend.

After realising the white powder wasn't actually amphetamine, he went back and tried to find the dealer, at about 10pm on October 14 last year.

Jeylaani, who didn't sell him the power, was part of a gang of men who he approached.

The student couldn't find the dealer, but spoke with members of the group who became 'agitated'.

Both men were attacked, with the victim's friend being punched and kicked.

After getting to his feet, he realised that his friend had suffered a serious wound to his face.

CCTV footage later revealed how Jeylaani had produced a large knife and slashed him.

He had also been stabbed in the stomach.

Kydden Malcom, 20, who was also part of the group, had punched the student to the floor, kicked him in the face as he lay on the ground then kicked him to the back.

Both attackers fled.

"It seems to have arisen out of a misunderstanding, and an overreaction to events," Mr Farrow said.

The victim was bleeding profusely.

He collapsed in hospital, either because of a cardiac arrest or a loss of consciousness, and needed three sets of CPR.

The 10cm wound also caused a fracture to his skull.

A judge said the student was 'fortunate to survive'.

"Far too often on our streets at night, serious violence breaks out and weapons are produced with serious consequences," Judge Alan Conrad QC said.

The student has suffered permanent scarring and fears it may affect his job prospects.

"He says that people stare at the scar, and he feels they avoid him and make adverse assumptions about him," prosecutor Adrian Farrow said.

He has made a physical recovery, but has been psychologically affected by his ordeal, Manchester Crown Court heard.

"He is very much aware that his life was endangered," Mr Farrow said.

The student had met the friend for the first time that day, after they had played pool together in the Courtyard.

Jeylaani, from Hulme, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

His barrister said Jeylaani, a convicted drug dealer, was armed with a knife for protection due to his previous dealing.

"It is on the back of that seemingly, he felt it was appropriate to protect himself and his family," his barrister Nick Ross said.

"But ultimately there are no excuses."

Mr Ross said Jeylaani comes from a 'hard working' and 'law abiding' family.

"It's a very sad situation for the Jeylaani family that Mohamed Jeylaani appears in this grave situation," the lawyer said.

Malcom, also from Hulme, avoided jail.

His barrister Mark Kellet said Malcom was being influenced by 'anti-social peer group pressures'.

He has found work in railway construction having lost his previous job during the pandemic.

Jeylaani, of Millhalf Close, Hulme, admitted section 18 wounding and possessing a blade.

Malcom, of Chorlton Road, Hulme, pleaded guilty to section 47 assault.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and was ordered to observe a curfew for six months and complete 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
