Student flats plan for vacant land beside Glasgow High Court

Plans have been submitted to build student flats on vacant land beside Glasgow city centre.

Developers are looking to build the six-storey block on land bounded by Bridgegate, St Margarets Place, Mart Street and Jocelyn Square - but have already faced opposition.

The site has been left undeveloped after its previous owner fell into administration and was previously used as a Euro car park.

Urbanite is now looking to use the space to create a 169-bedroom property with roof garden to accommodate students studying at nearby universities and colleges.

If given the go-ahead, the building would stand close to a number of listed buildings including the High Court of Justiciary on Saltmarket and historical tenements.

Residents have already submitted objections to the proposal, expressing concerns over the over-saturation of student accommodation in the area and issues it would create for owners accessing their property.

There are concerns over noise levels in the area due to the roof garden and a large number of pubs, restaurants and existing student accommodation.

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council’s planning committee.
