Student flats plan for historic Birmingham city centre site

A collection of historic buildings in Birmingham city centre are set to be converted into student accommodation.

The trio at 175-209 Corporation Street will undergo a major renovation to create 208 bedrooms across six storeys, a short walk from the campuses of both Aston and Birmingham City universities.

The majority of the accommodation will be taken up by 187 studios alongside 16 shared flats, one one-bed apartment and four two-bed apartments.

Subject to consent, there will also be amenity space including study areas, a cinema lounge and dining room while the basement will contain a laundry, gym and space for 52 bikes.

There will also be some repair and restoration work to the complex's façades.

The three buildings are Coleridge Chambers, Ruskin Chambers - both of which are grade II listed and date back to the late 1800s - and King Edward Building at the junction with Steelhouse Land which was completed in 1918.

They are collectively known as Chamberlain House and owned by Birmingham City Council which is workly jointly on the conversion scheme with Solihull-based developer BPG and architecture practice Broadway Malyan.

Large parts of the building are unoccupied but the ground floor area has tenants in situ including a takeaway and convenience store.

A report submitted in support of the new planning application said the project addressed an immediate requirement for specialist student accommodation, in a highly sustainable location within Birmingham city centre and walking distance from a number of higher education establishments.
