Student fined £200 after being caught at gathering

A student was caught taking part in a gathering in a Nottingham flat when the city was under tough Tier 3 restrictions.

Kelly Maja, 19, of Alfreton Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to participating in a gathering of two or more people in a private dwelling in a Tier 3 area.

The offence was on November 1, 2020, at a flat at The Atrium, Nottingham, the city's magistrates' court heard on Wednesday (May 12).

Officers attended the address on an anonymous tip-off after reports of people in a residence being loud.

It was believed there was a large group in a two-bedroom flat. Female voices were heard by police inside.

Police knocked on the door of the flat and were greeted by an occupant who said she did not live there. They spoke to the tenant.

Five people were inside the premises. Officers gave words of advice and a fixed penalty notice was issued which was not paid.

This was why Maja had to be summoned to court.

She is a student who works part-time, earning about £750 monthly

She was fined £200, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and costs of £85.
