Student fights off 11ft shark and kicks it head to escape in dramatic video

An 18-year-old school student feared he would lose a leg as he kicked a shark in the head, as it attacked him in the sea.

Lachlan Pye who was out spearfishing off the coast of North Queensland was filming himself when the 11ft shark appeared underneath him.

Panicking for his life and limbs, he kicked out with his fins as he attempted to save himself from the deep sea predator.

An 18-year-old school student has described his encounter with a three-and-a-half metre bull shark as "two minutes of terror".

Keen spearfisher Lachlan Pye said he was deep diving off the coast of North Queensland when things took a turn for the worse.

In the underwater Go-Pro footage, Mr Pye can be seen lining up a shot with a fish in front of him.

He told Nine news in Australia: "I didn't see it at all until it was underneath me.

"It pulled my foot down, I felt my ankle move and I looked down and it had taken a couple of chomps at the fin.

"It didn't go for the fish really, it just went for me. I feel pretty lucky I've got my feet still."

Mr Pye, who was fishing with his friend Presley Wilcox, was just metres away on a boat but had no idea what happened beneath the surface.

He said he heard his friend shout 'Shark' but didn't know how close his pal came until they watched the footage back.

The teens said, despite the close encounter, they would return to the water.

"That's the risk you take," Mr Pye added.
