Student detects Google bug, wins Rs 2 lakh

MANIPAL: A second-year engineering student from the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), MAHE has won a reward of approximately Rs 2 lakh as part of Google’s Vulnerability Reward Program.

MIT Manipal tweeted: Sohom Datta, a member of the Cryptonite project team (From CSE Dept) has identified a bug and was rewarded $3133.7 by Google's Vulnerability Reward Program.

Sohom told TOI, "I was looking for an open source library and found a bug in one of Google’s programmes and reported the same. Google, to honour all the cutting-edge external contributions that help in keeping their users safe, maintains a Vulnerability Reward Program for Google-owned web properties. Once I reported the bug, I received a message that I have been rewarded "

He adding that rewards are generally based on the severity of the reported bug.

He is a member of the Cryptonite student project team of MIT, MAHE. The team works in the field of ethical hacking and cybersecurity and focuses on cryptography, forensics, research, reverse engineering and web exploitation.

He had participated in Google Summer of Code last year and is a mentor at Wikimedia. This is a global programme focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development.
