Student arrested after video surfaced of fight with special needs student

April 24--Authorities arrested a student at West Ranch High School in Stevenson Ranch after a video surfaced that showed the student fighting with a special education student, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The fight occurred Thursday and the video was later posted to social media sites, authorities said. The clip shows two male students fighting and rolling around on the ground as several students watch and film.

The student was arrested Friday and detained on suspicion of battery, said sheriff's Lt. Rob Hahnlein. He's not sure if the student is still in custody. Hahnlein said. It's not clear what condition the special education student has.

The video sparked strong reaction from students at the high school, who began posting messages of support for the special education student under hashtags. Several wore black to school the day after the fight to show solidarity with the student, and one student posted an image of a supportive rally on the steps of the school to Twitter.

Sheriff's deputies are still investigating the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121.
