Stuck in Tories' Groundhog Day as Theresa May finally takes the plunge

It took Theresa May three years to work out what everyone else could see.

And she really made the country suffer while we waited.

Now, with a final croak of the throat, the Prime Minister is on the way out.

But if she thinks this is the end, she is sorely mistaken.

The whole of the UK is now stuck in a loop while Tories continue their dreadful psychodrama.

Ordinary people have essentially been yelling at the TV since 2016. But the Tories weren’t listening. Or at least they were being deviously selective about who they listened to.

May was one of the worst offenders.

Faced with a knife-edge EU referendum result, she walked into a trap of her own making as she took office.

She sided with the lunatic fringe in that odd netherworld where Jacob Rees-Mogg is considered forward-thinking.

It’s a surreal place populated with embarrassing caricatures such as Boris Johnson, a buffoon who nearly trashed the UK’s reputation abroad and now wants the keys to the kingdom.

It would be a travesty if Johnson or any of his other hardline friends were ushered in to lead Britain out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Nicola Sturgeon and Richard Leonard are right to call for a general election.

This farce cannot be allowed to go on for as long as the Tories see fit.

In Scotland, the seemingly acceptable face of Conservatism must now be dreading what comes next.

Ruth Davidson, as Scots Tory leader, made hay while the SNP focused on independence. She had an uneasy task making excuses for May. Imagine how it will be when someone like Johnson is calling the shots.

Back in Downing Street, at least May didn’t saunter back indoors with a jaunty whistle like her utterly vacuous predecessor David Cameron.

May can probably trace her podium tears back to the ex-PM who set the Tory party on such a disastrous trajectory.

Cameron is now swanning around as though he didn’t strike the fatal match.

May bows out on June 7.

That shouldn’t be the end of it. It’s time for a wholesale clear-out.
