Stubborn East Lothian swan sits in street and refuses to budge blocking traffic

A runaway swan was spotted being stubborn and refusing to move for drivers as it blocked off a street in Musselburgh on Thursday.

With what is starting to become a more common occurrence within Edinburgh and the Lothians, the big white birds have decided to get adventurous and operate outwith their more familiar habitats.

Last month, a swan was spotted scouring the streets in Leith, with a woman having to bark orders at it to ensure its safety.

This week, a similar event occurred on Shorthope Street can park, just beside the River Esk in East Lothian.

Carol Shepherd, 50, was one of several viewers that watched on as drivers had to smartly manoeuvre around the swan, as it sat in the middle of the road and refused to move.

Despite much encouragement from Carol and her daughter, Alex, the swan refused to budge, despite the imposing threat of drivers passing by.

She said: "It looked chilled as anything, another driver spotted it and told it to shoo, but it just looked at her and didn't budge. We beeped our horns, both cars, but to no avail.

"The lady was able to inch slowly past the swan and then we did likewise, coming within inches of the huge swan. My daughter and I slowly walked up to it, thinking that it had been hurt, but it looked quite happy just sitting there."

Carol also noted that a similar incident has occurred in the past two weeks with swans getting in the way of cars trying to park, but she has never encountered one refusing to move from the middle of the road.

She added: "I've never seen a swan just sat there without a care in the world. I expect it caused further mayhem for drivers entering and exiting the car park once we'd left."

Users on Facebook replied to Carol's post with some comedic comments. One said: "I saw two adults and a young down that street last Saturday heading towards the high street."

Another said: "Why should he move, it's his street!"

Several users agreed that maybe the swan had enough of people bothering him through the day. Another commented: "He's telling us it's his territory."
