Stubble burning cases decline in Haryana

By: Amit Kumar

KARNAL: Stubble burning cases in Haryana have dipped this season as compared to the past three years, according to data of the Haryana Remote Sensing Centre.

The state witnessed 35 cases of stubble burning (active fire location) between September 15 and October 7, compared to 570 cases reported in 2020. In 2019 and 2018, the figures were 165 and 346, respectively, during the corresponding period.

According to data, 11 cases of burning were reported on Thursday. So far, such cases have been reported from eight, out of 22, districts in the state. Of the total cases, around 83% were reported from the paddyrich belt of Karnal, Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts.

The maximum active fire locations were reported from Kurukshetra district

(13), followed by Karnal (11), Kaithal (5), Ambala (2), one each from Fatehabad, Palwal, Yamunanagar, and Sonipat.

Karnal agriculture department SDO Dinesh Sharma said the low fire count was the result of awareness drives to check stubble burning. Teams are keeping a close eye on the ground and the department has also issued an advisory to farmers not to burn straw, he said.
