Stuart Whitman dead: The Comancheros actor dies at the age of 92

Actor Stuart Whitman has died at the age of 92.

He was best known for starring in The Comancheros alongside John Wayne, 1961

Whitman also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his work in The Mark in the same year.

Friends of the actor told TMZ he had been in and out of hospital due to skin cancer that seeped into his blood stream.

He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death at his home in Montecito, California.

Whitman was a star of the silver screen for three decades - with 150 credits to his name - but was most renowned for his Westerns.

In the Comancheros, Whitman played gambler Paul Regret who escapes from prison to be hunted down by Texas Ranger Captain Jake Cutter, played by John Wayne.

He also starred in aviation comedy Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, 1965, and cult horror Night of the Lepus, 1972.

Whitman has had a string of TV roles including Highway Patrol and Superboy.

His last  credit was in the TV movie The President's Man in 2000, which also starred Chuck Norris.

Before turning to acting, Whitman served in the army and was an accomplished lightweight boxer.

He married three times and has five children in total.

He tied the knot with his third wife, Julia Vadimovna Paradiz, - who he met a friend's wedding - in St Petersburg, Russia in 2006.

Whitman was included on the Hollywood walk of Fame in 1998.
