Stuart Kettlewell tells Rangers Motherwell will 'enjoy' them having the ball as he reveals twofold plan

Stuart Kettlewell insists Motherwell must 'enjoy' spells of Rangers having the ball when Michael Beale's men come to Fir Park.

The new Steelmen boss has got off to a flying start with 10 points taken from four matches but sitting seven points adrift of the top half of the table. Motherwell have a poor record at home against both sides of the Old Firm divide in recent years, with Rangers hoping to keep pace with rivals Celtic as the gap remains a healthy nine points for Ange Postecoglou's side.

And Kettlwell expects Beale's squad to have a lot of the ball on Saturday lunchtime, but actually revealed the message to his players is to 'enjoy' spells of no possession. That is due to the fact that Well can make themselves hard to play against. The new gaffer also has some injury concerns to contend with and admitted his approach may have to change.

He said pre-match: “Potentially, what we have to choose from and the players that we have to select, I can see there being a slight change in approach.

“But it doesn’t mean we can’t be positive when we have possession of the ball.

“I always think when you play against the big two, there has to be a real mental toughness because you know at times they can have long periods on the ball.

“If you start to feel sorry for yourself and start to switch off, that’s when bad things can happen to you.

“That’s been a real clear message this week, to actually enjoy spells when you don’t have the ball because I think that can make you, one, difficult to play against, but also makes you maximise the opportunities you get when you’ve got the ball.”
