Struggling Worker Turns To Education For Career Advancement

Runoff U.S. Senate election in Georgia

After graduating from high school in 2017, N’Dea Gordon made the decision to enter the workforce instead of pursuing a college education due to the high cost and potential burden of student loans. Her initial plan was to advance in the service industry, hoping to secure promotions and acquire skills that could lead to a successful career.

However, as time passed, Gordon found herself stuck in a cycle of stagnant wages, prompting her to reconsider her strategy. Realizing that further education might be the key to unlocking better opportunities, she made the bold choice to return to school, hoping that the investment would ultimately pay off.

Reflecting on her experience, Gordon expressed her frustration at the lack of wage increases in her previous jobs, despite her hard work and dedication. The minimum wage was simply not sufficient to meet her financial needs, pushing her towards seeking additional skills and training to enhance her employability.

Currently residing in Columbus, Ohio, the 25-year-old is now enrolled in a cybersecurity program at Western Governors University, an online institution. Economic concerns have taken center stage in her decision-making process for the upcoming election, as she grapples with the challenges of rising food prices and escalating housing costs.

Gordon highlighted the significant impact of these financial pressures, noting the difficulty she faces in finding affordable housing options. The surge in rent and housing expenses over the past year has made it increasingly challenging for her to secure even a modest living space.

Expressing her views on job creation, Gordon emphasized the importance of transparency in understanding the opportunities presented by politicians. She stressed the need for clarity on the requirements and accessibility of newly created positions, advocating for a diverse range of job opportunities tailored to individuals with varying skill levels.
