Struggling Wigan Athletic left with 'costly' bill over vandalism near DW Stadium

Cash-strapped Wigan Athletic will be left with another bill to pay after yobs damaged astroturf patches near the DW Stadium.

Police say they have been dealing with littering, vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the site.

The pitches, behind the Ninja Warrior building on Stadium Way, have had panels ripped away and rubbish strewn across the surface.

Officers have repeatedly been called to the area - and have issued a warning to vandals.

In a post on GMP's Wigan West Facebook page, a spokesman for the force wrote: "Littering, criminal damage and anti-social behavior has become an increasing problem on the Wigan Athletic football playing pitches at the rear of the Ninja Warrior Wigan building.

"The below images highlight the extent of the issue and should act as a reminder to anyone using the pitches to respect the environment and clean up after yourselves.

"Wigan Athletic football club are going to carry out some costly repairs to the pitches this week, and the police are going to be paying extra attention to the area."

The Latics are in a tough position at the moment after the club dropped into administration at the beginning of the month.

A total of 75 members of staff have been made redundant in the last few weeks and the team is awaiting the results of an EFL appeal to see whether they will be relegated.

On Friday, administrators confirmed that ongoing discussions with a preferred buyer for the club had broken down and they would begin discussions with another interested party.
