Struggling Shane Duffy receives message of support from James McClean

Struggling Celtic star Shane Duffy has been sent a message of support from Republic of Ireland pal James McClean.

The Hoops loanee has been heavily criticised in recent weeks with a run of poor performances against Rangers, AC Milan and Aberdeen.

The big centre back was adjudged to be at fault for goals in each of the three games and critics haven't held back on their views.

Kris Commons slaughtered him and insisted he wasn't even in Efe Ambrose's league, while former Rangers defender Richard Foster reckons teams will target him.

But now he's been given some backing by his pal in the Ireland squad.

McClean is also a boyhood Celtic fan and has clearly been following Duffy closely since he made the move north of the border.

The pair also know each other from growing up in Derry and McClean took to Instagram to show support for the 28-year-old.

He shared an image of the pair celebrating a goal for Ireland with a caption of a green love heart and an flexing arm emoji to show the centre-back's strength.

It comes after Commons wrote in his weekly Daily Mail column: "Duffy just looks like an accident waiting to happen. A bomb scare and that's a criticism which used to be levelled at my old teammate Efe Ambrose.

"But I tell you what. On current form, I'd take Efe over Duffy all day long.

"Some people have branded him the Irish Efe Ambrose but that's doing Efe a real disservice.

"He's been rank rotten from the minute he walked through the door."
