‘Struggling’ Portobello cafe appeals for help after vandals smash window

Another Edinburgh business has been hit by vandals, leaving the owner to foot a £350 bill as they struggle to keep the doors open.

June Robertson has asked in Portobello locals to help with repairs through a crowdfunder after thugs smashed the window of her shop front on Portobello High Street.

The window of the Cake and Candy Tearoom was smashed over the weekend following a similar incident in Colinton where thugs trashed a beer garden.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live , June said it's the last thing her struggling business needs just now after being forced to close due to coronavirus.

She said: "It’s just upsetting as we are already struggling after being closed during lockdown, to them it’s just a smashed window but to us it’s a weeks rent and stock.

"Our excess is high so we are looking to replace it without claiming our insurance, this is the last thing a small business needs right now and the fact that the shop is directly opposite Portobello police station speaks volumes."

June has launched a crowdfunder asking local people if they would consider helping to fund the repairs.

So far £210 of the £350 target has been raised, with 18 people donating to the effort.

We reported last week how Colinton Inn was hit by vandals with outdoor tables and benches overturned and smashed.

Taking to Facebook, the pub owner slammed the "mindless nonsense when all of us are trying to get by in these odd times".
