Struggling Freo aim to build blocks for bright future

Fremantle forward Josh Treacy predicts there are exciting times ahead for the club despite the team languishing near the foot of the AFL table.

The Dockers' finals hopes are up in smoke after five losses in six matches dropped them to 15th on the ladder.

It's left Fremantle (7-10) above only Hawthorn, North Melbourne and West Coast.

The poor run of results is particularly disappointing given Fremantle broke their six-year finals drought last season on the way to beating the Bulldogs in a pulsating elimination final.

There will be no September action for Fremantle this year barring a remarkable late-season surge, but Treacy feels there's still plenty to gain in the remaining six weeks.

Fremantle are one of the youngest teams in the competition, and they have set out a bold plan to win the club's first premiership by 2025.

"Clearly (we are) very young, but exciting at the same time," Treacy told reporters on Monday.

"Everything might not come off at the moment, but I feel like moving forward into the back-end of this year and the start of next year, we can certainly build something and it can be very exciting for our footy club."

The gap between Fremantle and premiership favourites Collingwood was laid bare during the second quarter of Saturday's 46-point loss at the MCG.

The Magpies slammed home 10 goals to two during a ruthless second term, with Fremantle simply unable to stop the rot.

"I think we'll be able to learn from that, big time," Treacy said.

"I think we look at the bigger picture.

"We were able to be there for three of the quarters. Clearly a disappointing second quarter, but a lot of positives to take out of the other parts of the game when we were able to match them.

"We've got six games left, and I still think we can take a lot out of this season, regardless of what else is going on."

Ruckman Sean Darcy (ankle) remains a chance to play in Saturday night's match against Sydney in Perth, while Caleb Serong will return from suspension.

Forward Michael Frederick (soreness) is also expected to return.

But defender Brandon Walker appears set for a long stint on the sidelines after injuring his knee against Collingwood.

"No doubt that whatever he goes through, we'll be there with him the whole way to support him fully," Treacy said of Walker.
