Structure of Bengals practices explains some of Joe Burrow’s struggles

Much has been said about the struggle of Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals offense in training camp so far.

But believe it or not, some of it is by design.

While the defense has smacked around the offense and talked plenty of trash while doing it, some of the restrictions placed on the offense play a part.

As head coach Zac Taylor told reporters like Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic on Wednesday, there have been restrictions placed on the offense that limits what Burrow is allowed to do on a per-day basis.

In fact, Burrow got a rehab/rest day for Wednesday’s practice on a day that most of the work would occur on short stuff to running backs and tight ends.

Moving forward, the offense will have loosened restrictions and Burrow will be able to do more all over the field. But this step-by-step install process isn’t uncommon — nor is it uncommon for the defense to have an advantage over the offense early in camp.

In other words, there’s no reason to panic over the struggles of Burrow and the offense yet.
