'Structural incident' at civic centre sparks sudden closure

A Wirral civic centre is closed after a ceiling collapsed at the building.

Bebington Civic Centre, which is run by Wirral Council, is closed with immediate effect while a "full inspection" takes place after the "structural incident", which is understood to have been the collapse of a suspended ceiling in the basement of the building.

A spokesperson for Wirral Council confirmed an assessment will need to be made as to what works need to be carried out at the centre and that the closure is a "precautionary measure."

The spokesperson said: "Due to a structural incident at Bebington Civic Centre, the building will be closed to the public while a full inspection takes place and an assessment made as to what remedial works may be needed.

"It is not known at this stage how long a full closure will be needed, but clearly all activities at the centre - including the library and any planned clubs, meetings or events – have had to be cancelled until further notice.

"This is a precautionary measure taken in the interests of the safety of staff and visitors and we apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

"More details will be known once the inspection and assessment has been carried out. In the meantime, other libraries are open at Birkenhead, Bromborough, Eastham, Greasby, Moreton, Rock Ferry, Wallasey Central and West Kirby.

"There is also an ‘order and collect’ service operating at Birkenhead, Wallasey Central and West Kirby libraries. The Home Reader Service is also continuing to operate."

The ECHO understands that part of the civic centre was being used by Bebington Co-op Academy Sixth Form while work is being carried out on the school premises, which was affected by floods at the start of September and have now been moved to an alternative site while an inspection is being carried out.

In a tweet posted on September 27, a spokesperson for Bebington Co-op Academy said: "Unfortunately, the school is now a construction site.

"We have been praised by our Co-op managers for getting students back in immediately and though 6th form are at The Civic Centre our students have been amazing. We hope all works will be completed by October half term."

Bebington Co-op Academy declined to comment on the closure of the civic centre.
