Met Office warning as Storm Ciara hits Nottinghamshire

Strong winds of up to 80mph are expected to hit Nottinghamshire.

Storm Ciara is expected to hit the UK, with outbreaks of heavy rain.

The Met Office has placed an amber warning over the region on Sunday, February 9 - an amber means disruption to travel is likely.

Train services are expected to be affected with a limited service running.

Warnings have been issued that the winds could also damage some buildings and close some roads and bridges.

There is also the possibility of power cuts.

Outdoor venue Sherwood Pines has confirmed it will be closed on Sunday due to the expected strong winds.

A spokesman said: "Unfortunately due to high winds forecast we’ve decided to close Sherwood Pines tomorrow (Sunday 09 February) for safety reasons. We’ll post an update once safety checks are completed and we’re open again as normal."

For Nottingham, a 90 percent chance of heavy rain is forecast from 6am onwards. The rain will continue until 1pm and will slow down from 2pm onwards.

There is expected to be a break between 6pm and 7pm, but lighter rain is expected throughout the night.

Monday will be a clear day with some sunny spells by late afternoon.

Speaking about the disruption expected on Sunday, a spokesman for East Midlands Railway said: "Storm Ciara is expected to hit the UK this Sunday, bringing strong winds of up to 80mph and outbreaks of heavy rain as it moves through the UK.

"Network Rail are working closely with East Midlands Railway and all train operators in preparation for the severe weather.

"High winds have the potential to cause damage to overhead electric lines, as well as to the tracks through debris or line-side trees falling. To keep you safe, Network Rail advises reduced services and speed restrictions are likely to be in place across large parts of the rail network on Sunday."
