'Strong winds' felt on Merseyside linked to Atlantic pressure say Met Office

People across Liverpool today complained of strong winds as gusts of 20mph hit the region.

This comes after a weather warning of heavy rain was announced for parts of the UK.

The weather has been mostly dry in Merseyside , with occasional showers in some places.

However, a number of people in the area reported being hit by strong blustery winds.

The ECHO spoke to the Met Office to find out the strongest wind speed recorded in Merseyside today and whether we can expect the gales to continue.

Operational meteorologist John Griffiths said: "At Liverpool Airport the average wind speed recorded was around 20mph from the north.

"The highest recorded speed was 30mph - which is not particularly strong for autumn, but it has been ongoing from last night."

The Met Office said they would class the winds felt in Merseyside as a moderate to fresh breeze.

Mr Griffiths added: "There's been an area of low pressure in the south of the UK and a high pressure over the Atlantic, so the wind is a result of the squeeze between the two areas."

According to the forecasters, Liverpool has not actually been one of the windiest places in the North West.

Manchester Airport averaged gales of 25mph - five miles per hour faster than Liverpool.

However, Mr Griffiths said that the wind should die down tomorrow to a moderate breeze coming from the north.

This evening will be a mostly dry start with a few showers in places.

But these shower will become more frequent and turn to longer spells of rain overnight.

Friday will be mostly dry but cloudy, with the day becoming brighter later as the cloud thins and breaks through the afternoon.
