People in Canada have shared startling footage of a rare “ice tsunami” pushing its way along the Niagara River.

Video from Niagara Regional Police Service shows a wall of huge chunks of ice rippling over a retaining wall from the lake, pushed along by 60mph winds near Lake Erie in Ontario.

The wave created large piles of ice on the road, forcing officials to close it to protect drivers.

Local media reported that an ice tsunami forms when strong winds push the ice from the water’s surface onto the land.

Mitch Meredith, an extreme weather meteorologist with Environment Canada, told Narcity that strong wind forces caused water levels to rise and the ice to break up, resulting in “jams” along the river banks.

High force winds and ice have wreaked havoc in the local area.

A 77-year-old woman from Port Dover, Ontario was rescued from her home by emergency crews when ice and water forced up by high-force winds flooded her house.

The weather has also caused trees to come down and the closure of major roads and highways.
