Strong winds and rain set for the North East as weekend weather takes autumnal turn

It looks like summer is definitely behind us with blustery showers heading to the North East.

As we head into the weekend, strong winds and rain will hit the region but there will still be some brighter spells.

Temperatures are also dropping bringing the potential for some morning frost in rural areas.

Met Office Meteorologist Oli Claydon told us what to expect:

Wednesday

"There is some rain on the way, moving eastwards through the day, which is associated with a low pressure system over Scotland.

"This will affect the whole of the region in the afternoon.

"There will also be increasing winds through the latter part of the afternoon and into the evening.

"As that rain moves eastwards, it will dry up. Temperatures on Thursday will see lows of 16°C.

Thursday

"There will be a bright, clear start throughout the whole region. Early in the day it may be chilly in rural areas and we could see some frost.

"Some cloud will move in from the west by lunchtime and there's the chance of the odd shower.

"The brightest spells will be further north in the Northumberland area.

"There will be some scattered showers through the afternoon but brightening up by the time we get into the evening.

"Again temperatures will be around 16°C."

Friday

"In the early hours there will be further wind and rain moving in from the west but by the time we get to waking hours that rain will have shifted eastwards.

"There may still be a little bit around lunchtime.

"Winds will ease as we get into the latter part of the afternoon and into the weekend."
