Strong Typhoon No. 10 to make landfall in Shikoku on Thursday

Typhoon No. 10 is expected to make landfall in the area from the Kyushu to Shikoku regions on Thursday before cutting vertically through western Japan. As of Wednesday, the typhoon was situated southeast off Tanegashima island of Kagoshima Prefecture, heading north-northwest.

West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) announced Wednesday that it would suspend services all-day Thursday on the Sanyo Shinkansen line between Shin-Osaka Station and Kokura Station in Kyushu. Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) also decided to cancel about 60 services on the Tokaido Shinkansen line for Thursday. Aug. 15 is usually the day many people travel back to major urban areas after spending the Bon holiday season in their hometowns.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled 96 domestic flights on Wednesday, with the bulk of those on routes into or out of Miyazaki Airport.

Meanwhile, the organizers of the National High School Baseball Championship being held at Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, announced that the four games scheduled for Thursday will instead be held on Friday.

Very heavy rain accompanied by lightning is expected mainly on the Pacific coasts. The rainfall expected in the 24 hours through noon Thursday is 900 millimeters in the Shikoku region, 600 millimeters in the Tokai region and 500 millimeters in the Kinki, Kyushu and other regions.

The Wednesday and Thursday sessions of the four-day Awa Odori dance festival in Tokushima were cancelled, the first time since 1996 that half the event was not held.
