'Strong smell' leads police to huge drug factory on Gloucestershire industrial estate

Hundreds of plants were found during a raid on a cannabis farm after police were tipped-off about a "strange smell".

People started noticing a strong odour coming from a rented industrial unit in Lydney, and the landlord said the electricity bill had soared.

Around 350 plants were found during a police raid on Tuesday (August 4), reported Gloucestershire Live.

Police also discovered two beds suggesting people had been living inside the unit. No one was inside the building when the raid took place, and no arrests have been made.

After electricians made the premises safe, police dismantled the cannabis factory.

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesman said: "On Tuesday morning police were informed that a strong smell had been coming from the unit, which was rented, and the owner noticed a sudden increase in electric bills.

"The local policing team attended and more than 350 plants were discovered, as well as two beds suggesting people had been living inside the unit.

"No one was there when police arrived and no arrests have been made at this stage with the investigation ongoing.

"The find was dismantled after it was made safe by electricians."

Anyone with information about this is asked to call police on 101 and quote incident 75 of August 4.

Drug activity can be reported to police on 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
