A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.7 hit Iriomotejima island, Okinawa Prefecture, at about 10:42 p.m. Thursday.
A lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was registered in the town of Taketomi in the prefecture.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake's epicenter was near Iriomotejima island in the prefecture and occurred at a depth of about 20 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued.
