Strong currents as water levels rise by more than five feet near Beeston Weir

River monitors in Nottinghamshire have shown high levels of water heading towards Beeston Weir.

Rain has been battering the county for more than a week leaving north Nottinghamshire heavily flooded and people being evacuated in Worksop and Mansfield.

Over the weekend, (November 10 and 11) the rising river levels affected the Trent leading to flood warnings for Newark, Holme Pierrepont and for the Queens Drive park and ride, which was closed as a precaution.

As the Beeston Weir is a non-navigable section of the river, there are no records on this specific area however the nearest monitor at Cranfleet shows what is heading in the direction of Beeston.

A spokesman for the Canal and River Trust said: "Our monitor at Cranfleet shows the river right now is 1.7metres (5.5 feet) above normal.

"It peaked at 2.04metres (6.7 feet) above normal on Saturday morning.

"With more rain forecast overnight and on Thursday they are likely to rise again.

"The force of the water below the weir is currently very powerful and we would urge people to keep well away."

The Met Office has warned of more rain expected on Thursday, November 14 covering most of Nottinghamshire.
