Strong 70mph winds to batter Scotland as transport disruption expected

Scots are warned to brace themselves for strong winds on Tuesday and the country will be battered by 70mph gusts.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from 5am on Tuesday until 9pm as strong southwesterly winds are expected.

Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely, with 70-75 mph gusts around some of the most exposed coastal and upland sites.

The Met Office has issued a warning of some delays to transport on road, rail and ferry services.

High-sided vehicles on exposed bridges and routes will also face delays, and large waves and spray will batter coastal routes.

The weather warning comes after Scotland enjoyed one of the mildest winters on record.
