Stromboli eruption: Italian volcano spews smoke and lava in second eruption this summer

The Italian volcano Stromboli has erupted for the second time in less than two months, unleashing a dramatic plume of smoke and spewing fiery chunks of lava onto the tiny Italian island.

An explosion of "high intensity" was recorded at 12.17am on Wednesday, the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology said.

Flaming lava was seen rolling down the volcano's slopes to the edge of the sea.

No casualties or damages were reported although some small fires were reported near one of the Mediterranean island's hamlets.

The president of the Sicily region, Nello Musumeci, said the docking of private boats in the island had been suspended for a few hours on Wednesday as a precaution.

"Luckily there were no damages to people and properties," Mr Musumeci said on Facebook.

It comes just weeks after the volcano erupted in July, releasing hot trapped magma in a powerful explosion.

July's eruption killed one person and enveloped the popular tourist destination in ash.

Stromboli, population 400, is 135 miles (217 kilometers) southeast of Naples in the Aeolian archipelago and is one of three active Italian volcanoes.

Rumbling almost continuously, Stromboli sends out streams of lava, whose red-hot glows can be seen from offshore at night.
