Four fire trucks are at the scene, along with police cars and ambulances.

According to witnesses, smoke was coming from one of the windows of the building at around 1.15pm.

Firefighters have been spotted at the front and back of the site and crews have connected a pump to a hydrant at the junction with Churchgate.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed that no casualties have been reported.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) asked people to avoid the area.

A TfGM spokesman tweeted: "Due to a building fire Bank Street Bolton has been closed in both directions.

"Please avoid the area if possible while emergency services work at the scene.

"Delays and localised congestion highly likely.

"Plan ahead for an easier journey."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 1pm on Friday 18 June, firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a building on Bank Street, Bolton.

“Five fire engines from Bolton Central, Horwich, Farnworth and Atherton fire stations arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“GMFRS crews remain in attendance.”

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
