Striking golden monkey climbs the walls of the Botanics to warn locals of climate change

Edinburgh's own King Kong has scaled the Botanic Gardens this week as they showcase a new exhibition on climate change.

The 'Golden Monkey' installations have previously been spotted on skyscrapers in Beijing and Hong Kong, but now the sculpture has made its way onto Inverleith House.

The monkey itself is pretty hard to miss, standing at 10 feet tall the sculpture is part of a programme to draw attention to the global climate crisis.

Artist Lisa Roet is known for her giant, inflatable, intricately detailed sculptures of the golden snub-nosed monkey – an endangered species found in the frosty, mountainous forests of central and southwestern China.

According to the Botanics, there are currently five species of snub-nosed monkey, all of whom are at risk of extinction.

Emma Nicolson, Head of Creative Programmes at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, said, “We are thrilled to be premiering this important work by Lisa Roet as part of our inaugural season of Climate House.

"The work is a statement reminding us that we all need to act, and now, to prevent further ecological disaster. I also hope the work gives us, in 2020, a work to see as we spend time outdoors, to reflect upon and with.”

Artist Lisa Roet said: I’m so excited to see this work come to Scotland , presented in the prestigious Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh sharing the message about sustainability and conservation.

The sculpture can be seen alongside a major new exhibition inside Climate House. and will run from October 16 until December 13 2020.
