Striking Damien Hirst angel sculpture to go on show in Leeds city centre

One of Damien Hirst's most eye-catching sculptures will be on show in the heart of Leeds city centre this summer.

The internationally-acclaimed artist, who grew up in Leeds, will see a number of his works on show in the city as part of the Yorkshire Sculpture International festival, which runs from Saturday, June 22 until Sunday, September 29.

One of the most visible sculptures throughout the course of the festival will be Anatomy of an Angel, which will loom large over shoppers in the Victoria Quarter.

The marble statue will be on show throughout the duration of the festival, giving people in Leeds the chance to see it up close without visiting an art gallery.

The 6'1" sculpture is based on L'Hirondelle, a 1920s statue by Alfred Boucher.

But Hirst's 2008 version shows the skin peeled back to show muscles and bones underneath the skin. Critics say this is to show that the angel is, in fact, human after all.

Other venues showcasing sculptures throughout the festival include Briggate, Leeds Art Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
