Striker signing on Nottingham Forest's radar as Reds in talks over January move

Nottingham Forest are understood to be keen on doing a deal for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Glenn Murray before Monday’s deadline.

The 37-year-old has been on the Reds’ radar for some time, and the club are now said to be in talks about the possibility of bringing him to the City Ground.

Forest boss Chris Hughton is believed to be eyeing a reunion with Murray, who he worked with during his time with the Seagulls.

Murray is currently on loan at Watford but has been struggling for regular game time with the Hornets.

He has made six appearances this term, with all but two of those coming from off the bench.

So far this month, the Reds have extended the loan of Anthony Knockaert from Fulham and brought in Filip Krovinovic on loan from Benfica.

But Hughton is hoping to bolster his attacking resources further before the window closes, as he tries to lift his team away from danger in the Championship table.

A loan or a permanent move to the City Ground are understood to be options for Murray, given Forest already have five loanees on their books - the maximum number allowed for a matchday squad. And The Athletic say discussions are "ongoing" between the clubs.

Hughton played down talk linking him with a move for Murray, when asked after Saturday’s FA Cup thumping at Swansea City.

“I would imagine it’s very much to do with my connection with him and certainly at the moment, this is just speculation,” he said.

The Reds have struggled for goals this season, with Lewis Grabban having netted twice and Lyle Taylor on five in all competitions.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash with Barnsley, Hughton’s side sit 20th in the table, just two points above the drop zone.

According to the Daily Mirror, Murray “would welcome the chance to link up again with Hughton”.

There isn’t a break clause in the forward’s deal with Watford, so it would require agreement from all parties to get any move done.

Forest were also interested in Murray last January, when Sabri Lamouchi was in charge.

Hughton has said of the possibility of more signings: “If we’re able to do any more business then then we will do. But the January window is always very difficult so we will continue to work as hard as we can.”
