'Striker's union' - Liverpool sent encouraging Darwin Nunez message amid goal drought

A former Premier League striker who knows a thing or two about luck in front of goal has admitted he has started to feel sorry for Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan has found the net nine times for Liverpool so far this season, but is without a goal in his last four appearances. However, during that mini-drought, he has missed a host of good chances that could potentially have seen him almost double his current tally.

Nunez was all out of luck again on Tuesday evening when he went around Brentford goalkeeper David Raya only to see his shot blocked on the line by Ben Mee before having a goal ruled out in the second half by an offside flag. The chalked-off strike was typical of the 23-year-old's fortune of late, but ex-Sunderland and Tottenham hitman Darren Bent has plenty of sympathy for a fellow striker who has hit upon a lean spell.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Bent said: "Do you know who I do feel sorry for, for Liverpool? I don’t know if it’s the striker’s union, but Darwin Nunez. This guy will do everything right until he gets to the last bit.

"He scored one good goal, which he was offside [against Brentford], but it’s a good finish. But he just gets opportunities and he almost seems to get caught in-between. He goes round the goalkeeper and manages to hit the only place where there’s a defender on the line. For someone whose movement is that good, who’s that quick, it will turn for him.”

Bent scored 217 career goals in 568 appearances across a 17-year career, but Liverpool supporters will never forget the most fortunate goal of his career. While representing Sunderland against the Reds on October 17, 2009 he scored the only goal of the game when his shot smashed against a beach ball that had been thrown onto the pitch by a young Liverpool supporter before kick-off. The impact confused Reds 'keeper Pepe Reina before the ball ended up in the back of the net, as the Black Cats went on to record a contentious 1-0 home win.

Nunez earned himself a big-money move to Anfield after netting 34 goals for Benfica in 41 appearances last season.
