Striker returns to Nottingham Forest after unsuccessful loan spell

Virgil Gomis has returned to Nottingham Forest after an unsuccessful spell at Grimsby Town.

The 21-year-old striker joined the Mariners on a season-long loan in October, but is back with the Reds after failing to score in six appearances.

Ian Holloway signed Gomis, saying at the time : “I've had a look at him a bit now and if you look at his record when he has been out on loan, it's not as good as the 23s, but both Gary Brazil and (on-loan Forest defender) Danny Preston believe that he will respond very well to me.

“Hopefully, with the way I want to play I need lots of attackers to choose from and with the schedule of games that we've got because of the Covid situation, it's absolutely paramount that I've got enough people to be fresh on a Saturday and then on the Tuesday and then again on the Saturday."

However, Holloway quit last month with Paul Hurst returning to the club as manager.

Gomis had not featured for Grimsby since the start of December and is now set to return to Forest's Under-23 set-up.

Left-back Preston has been more successful, playing 25 times as a key member of the team, which are currently 23rd in League Two.
