Striker Main is right in the groove

Saints new hitman Curtis Main knew it was vital to get off the mark early for the club — and was delighted to do just that.

The former Motherwell man netted on his debut against Dunfermline and scored his second against Stenhousemuir in the Premier Sports Cup.

And now Main, who also provided an assist for his new strike partner Eamonn Brophy in the 2-2 draw against Dundee on the opening day of the league campaign, hopes he has set himself up to contribute well throughout a successful season for the Paisley side.

He also hopes to spark a partnership similar to the one he forged with former Steelmen striker Ryan Bowman with new sidekick Brophy.

He told Express Sport: “It was nice to get off the mark straight away. Cup ties are good in that regard and they also help fitness-wise.

“We just want to carry our cup form into the league season. The manager believes in playing with two strikers and he’s made signings with that in mind.

“We’re going to continue with that this season and we have four really good front men in the building. Other teams tend not to go with that so we’re hoping it could be an advantage for us.

“A couple of years ago at Motherwell I had a great understanding with Ryan Bowman and we did well due to the way our side was set up.

“I’m hoping Eamonn and I can do something similar here. Sometimes you have to practise that on the training ground and sometimes it just happens – with Eamonn and I, it’s been a bit of both, really.”

Main joined Saints this summer after leaving Shrewsbury Town, where he spent the second half of last season after his departure from Aberdeen.

And despite playing in Scotland, and against St Mirren before heading down south, he revealed he didn’t ask any former teammates about the club.

After one phone conversation with Buddies boss Jim Goodwin the striker was sold on making the move.

This afternoon’s visitors Hearts are returning to the scene of the crime which ultimately saw them relegated two seasons ago.

The former Dons man wasn’t at the club at that point, when Jon Obika’s strike was crucial in sending the Jambos down after the early conclusion of the campaign due to Covid-19.

But he insists it’s not something that has come up in conversations, either with teammates who played in that pressure cooker of a game and atmosphere.

Main added: “I only ever spoke to the manager. That was the only conversation I needed to have because he makes the decisions from top tobottom.

“No, he’s never mentioned it and there won’t be too many people there anyway and no Hearts fans.

“I don’t expect it to be an issue that’s for sure.”
