Striker 'keen on January transfer' to Manchester United and more transfer rumours

Veteran striker Mario Mandzukic is 'keen on a January transfer' to Manchester United, according to reports.

United may be looking to bring a striker in once the transfer window reopens in the new year as their lack of options in attacking areas has been exposed so far this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deemed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez surplus to requirements in the summer with the pair making the move to Serie A side Inter.

It left United with just Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as their senior, recognised strikers, with a young Mason Greenwood as back-up.

However, Martial hasn't kicked a ball since August due to injury and the other two have had their injury problems as well.

It's made United incredibly light up-front and they haven't scored more than one goal in game since the opening weekend 4-0 victory over Chelsea.

As a result it would be no surprise if United made a move for a striker in the winter window and according to CalcioMercato, cited by SportWitness, United are in 'pole' position to sign Mandzukic.

The Croatian has seen himself stranded on the fringes at Juventus this season as he isn't in new manager Maurizio Sarri's plans, having been left out of the Champions League squad.

It's reported that the striker is 'even further away' from the club and that he is likely to leave in January after turning down an offer to play in Qatar.

It's claimed that Mandzukic 'now wants to play for an important club due to his current situation at Juve' and 'United could provide him this opportunity.'

Meanwhile, United could face competition from Tottenham for Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison.

The 22-year-old is a player much admired at Old Trafford and it’s expected United could make a move for him next summer. But the Daily Star  report that Spurs have made Maddison their top target to replace Christian Eriksen, who will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.
