Strike action suspended as council workers offered new pay deal

Industrial action by council workers has been suspended after a deal was offered at the "11th hour".

Members of trade unions GMB, Unison and and Unite at East Renfrewshire Council had all planned to walk out on November 8.

Binmen, recycling centre workers, school janitors, catering staff and cleaners were those workers fighting for a better pay deal.

Now the Scottish councils’ umbrella body, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), has proposed a one-year 5.89 per cent increase for the lowest paid council staff, as part of a £1062 rise for all staff earning below £25,000,

Drew Duffy from GMB said: “We have received a new offer from Cosla that will be subject to a two-week consultation of our members from Monday 1 November, during which we have agreed to suspend strike action.

“While we are pleased that more money for key workers has been found at the 11th hour, the fact it’s taken to the brink of the COP to get this offer speaks volumes to our members.

“For months, COSLA said they couldn’t pay, and Ministers said they wouldn’t pay, while staff have been attacked by political leaders for standing up for their services and value.

“Our members will now decide if this offer delivers that value, but it’s clear that Ministers and employers must show far more respect to the people providing vital local services.”

Members in East Renfrewshire were due to take part in the walkout, alongside members in Glasgow. It would have taken place during the upcoming COP26 climate summit, which starts on Sunday in Glasgow.

Local GMB organiser Kirsten Muat said: “Our members are doing this for the sake of every local government worker.

“We are talking about the binmen who went out every day during the pandemic, the staff who opened schools and kept kids fed and the parks workers who went out and took care of them so we could meet friends there when we couldn’t go anywhere else.”
