Strictly viewers sobbing as they notice AJ's gesture for finalist Rose

Strictly Come Dancing fans were emotional as they sat down to watch the final without AJ Odudu and Kai Widdington.

TV presenter AJ was forced to pull out of the running to win the coveted glitterball after tearing a ligament in her right ankle, leaving John Whaite and Rose Ayling-Ellis as the remaining finalists with their dance partners Johannes Radebe and Giovanni Pernice.

She was in the audience to cheer them on alongside Kai and the audience chanted her name as they paid tribute.

"She is and always will be an extraordinary Strictly finalist," said host Claudia Winkleman.

"AJ we love you," added Tess Daly.

Fans were delighted when they spotted her 'Strictlified' glittery crutches.

And they were in tears when they spotted her waving them in the air to sign applause for EastEnders star Rose, who is the BBC dance show's first deaf contestant.

They took to Twitter to have their say.

@AislingDucks said with crying emojis: "AJ’s glittery crutches.

"I’m heartbroken for her and Kai."

@JoshuaTindall commented: "AJ with the glittery crutches, I can’t."

@tomilo said emotionally: "Not AJ banging her crutches together as applause."

@CQEdinburgh gasped: "AJ’s glittery crutches I AM ENDED."

And @ohwondrs said: "Screaming at AJ and her crutches."

AJ was devastated to have to leave the competition after coming so far.

She told fans on her Instagram: "I've done all I can possibly do to get back on my feet for the @bbcstrictly final, I even asked the docs if I could perform in a medical moonboot! But the fact is, I can't stand on my feet let alone dance because I've torn my spring ligament.

"Learning to dance over the last 13 weeks has been an incredible honour and to do it alongside someone as special, patient and devoted as Kai is something I'll treasure forever.

"You're the best @kaiwidd and I know you were ready to be my human crutch on that dancefloor come tomorrow night. Gutted!"
