It was an emotional opening dance (Guy Levy/BBC)

"So we've got a WWI soldier dancing with someone in 1940s garb. Shame on you, BBC!" commented @ErnstScribbler.

"Why are the women dressed in 40s outfits & the men as Soldiers in the trenches of WWI? Makes no sense," asked @TimmyLDN.

"Ummm. Men in WW1 uniforms and women in WW2 outfits?" asked @Streety.

"Why are Great War soldiers with a backdrop of the trenches dancing with WWII dressed ladies? #Strictly Confused," said @Doilynet.

"I'm confused. The men dressed as soldiers from WWI and the women dressed from the 1940s," said @ToriaTowers.

And Fran Sinclair asked: "Why were the eras of costumes mixed up though?"

From the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel ,You'll Never Walk Alone became the anthem for Liverpool FC.

And fans said it was a perfect choice for the dance.

"You'll Never Walk Alone. Nice touch on #RemembranceSunday," said @upperkingkenny.

"I'm a West Ham fan but the Liverpool anthem of "You'll never walk alone" has to be one of the most powerful songs of all time," said @Bobby_Seagull

"In tears at that beautiful dance," said @labelladonna75

"Everything is making me cry at the moment. That was lovely," said @SamanthaMalin.

The Manchester Evening News has approached the BBC for comment.
