Strictly's Katya Jones blown away by Newcastle theatre during DIY SOS filming in Wallsend

Katya Jones has been blown away by the work of an 'amazing' Newcastle theatre as she plays a key role in a DIY SOS project on Tyneside this.

Katya, who won Strictly at the end of 2017, alongside actor Joe McFadden, is one of several pro dancers who have been hard at work over the last few days for the Big Build in Wallsend as the DIY SOS team, including host and handyman Nick Knowles, put their all into transforming a derelict building for the True Colours Theatre. The charity is an inclusive theatre school for children and young people in the North East, many of whom have additional needs such as autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, physical and life limiting conditions and various mental health issues.

As well as donning a hard hat and a sparkled up hi-vis for her very different new role, Katya, along with BBC presenter Nick took their seats to see the True Colours children in action at the weekend, with Katya taking to Instagram having been bowled over, not just by the talent on stage, but for everything the theatre does for the youngsters.

Giving an update with Nick on how things were going, Katya said: "It was really special wasn't it? As we got to go and watch a True Colours concert, as Nick replied: "Yes, it was their annual concert. We went to see it last night and it was amazing wasn't it?"

Massively impressed by what she'd seen, Katya continued: "It was phenomenal to see how music, dancing and movement in general allows those children to communicate to the world; but I think it's only possible because True Colours has created this lovely all inclusive environment for them and it definitely gave us this extra determination.

The project's big reveal is set to take place later today, Tuesday, July 11, when Strictly judge Anton Du Beke will be on site to do the honours.
