Strictly's John Whaite left 'shaken' after trying out fish and chips in London

Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite has said he feels ‘shaken’ after trying fish and chips in London.

The celebrity chef and former Great British Bake Off winner took to Instagram stories to reveal was not a fan of a chippy tea in the capital.

He told his 159,000 followers he was especially disappointed his battered fish still had the skin left on.

Sharing a snap of his underwhelming dinner, the 32-year-old from Wigan: “Fish and chips in London.

“Why do so many chippies leave the skin on fish? Riddle me this, I don’t like it Cathy.”

John claimed he was so traumatised he had to scoff some chocolate and a mince pie just to “calm my nerves.”

He said: Not being funny guys, but that skin on deep fried fish has shaken me so much - I'm having to have a chocolate covered marzipan to calm my nerves.

"I won't go to sleep tonight. What was all that about?"

John then added he was also having a mince pie as the chocolate wasn’t cutting it alone.

Fans were quick to back John up, with one saying: “Never leave the skin on fish and chips totally ruins a good fish and chip tea.”

Another wrote: “Skin on fish yukky. Londoners know nothing about fish and chips.”

“I’m with you, leaving the skin on is not to everyone’s tastes,” said a third.

While a fourth wrote: “Yikes! Leaving the skin on fish and then frying it seems very odd – maybe it’s a London thing. The bigger story should be, ‘Where’s the gravy?’”

However, not everyone agreed with John’s views on fish and chips in the capital.

Defending southerners ways of doing things, one man said: “Perfectly normal with skin on. It’s the way I’ve always had it. But I am from down south.”

John and dance partner Johannes Radebe – who are making history as Strictly’s first all-male pairing – were praised for their performance last weekend.

Billed as the ones to watch this series, the duo wowed viewers on Saturday night with their Cha Cha to Years & Years track Starstruck.

Admitting he had “the best night”, John said it was so good he is now up for getting a Strictly tattoo.

He told Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two: “I am definitely going to get one of those planets tattooed on me, because that night I felt like I'd been born. Honestly!"

This week, John and Johnannes will perform the paso doble to He's A Pirate from Pirates Of The Caribbean for Movie Week.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday October 9 on BBC One.
