Strictly's Johannes Radebe 'frontrunner' to be in first same sex couple for 2020 series

Strictly Come Dancing is planning to pair up same sex couples in this year's series for the first time ever, according to reports.

And the frontrunner to be the professional half of the pair is Johannes Radebe, who has been the most open about wanting to be in a same sex pair and is openly gay.

ITV's Dancing On Ice became the first show to have a couple of the same sex compete last year.

BBC's Strictly is now not far behind and has reportedly been planning to introduce the same thing, though this year's series is still up in the air due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Johannes, 33, has already performed a same sex routine on the show, with Graziano Di Prima in a one-off dance last year.

A source told The Sun : "Many of Strictly’s stars have called on producers to cast a same-sex couple for the past few years and it’s been decided this will be the year.

“Johannes made history with Graziano in the last series by becoming the first same-sex dancers to perform and he’s made no secret of how keen he’d be to take on the role.

Anton Du Beke said the 2020 series is still up in the air (BBC)

“None of the dancers have been ruled out of the running but Johannes has been the most vocal about stepping forward and making history again on the series."

MirrorOnline has reached out to a rep for the show for comment.

Professional dancer Anton Du Beke has warned that the show's start date could be delayed as part of the BBC's emergency contingency plan.

The  coronavirus  pandemic has caused havoc for show bosses, who have struggled to sign stars for this year's show during the crisis.

"The celebrities don't get involved until the beginning of September," Anton explained on GMB. "So there's that contingency that we could move it back."

However he added: "No one knows anything yet because the lockdown is still going on."
